Great Swim's 2017 In Numbers

With thousands of participants of all ages diving in for fun, fitness, fundraising or to try a new challenge, 2017 has been an eventful year for the Great Swim Series.

Here is this year’s Great Swim Series in numbers:

1) 10 years of Great Swim

In 2017, the Great Swim Series celebrated its 10th anniversary.

For ten years, Great Swim has provided thousands of swimmers with exhilarating, challenging and safe events, whatever their age or ability.

2) £2 million raised for charity

An estimated £2 million has been raised by participants of the Great Swim Series in 2017.

Over half of this was raised at the Series’ flagship event, the Great North Swim in Windermere.

3) Over 10,000 finishers

Over 10,000 swimmers of all ages and abilities completed a variety of distances across the Great Swim Series, from the new Swim250 distance for eight-year-olds and upwards to the Marathon 10k swim!

4) Over 200 participants in Great SwimRun

Great Swim’s brand new SwimRun distance celebrated over 200 participants in its inaugural year.

The distance features a combination of swimming and running in teams of two. Great North SwimRun will return for 2018 and entries are open. 

5) 11% of swimmers were under 25

With the addition of a new Swim250 distance in both the Great North Swim and the Great East Swim, youngsters were able to take part in the series for the very first time, as well as a number of young adults across the UK.

6) 3% of swimmers were over 61

A lot of our participants are showing that age really is just a number!

7) 53% of swimmers were female

53% of participants in the Great Swim Series this year were female.

8) 33% of Swimmers were beginners

Over 33% of participants from this year’s Great Swim Series were beginner swimmers. Well done for taking on an amazing challenge in 2017 and we hope to see you in 2018!
