You'll Never Swim Alone: A Brother's Tribute at the Great North Swim
Woody Long, 36, from Aylesbury in Buckinghamshire, is diving into the Arla Great North Swim for the very first time - but with a mission that runs far deeper than the water.
Alongside his sister-in-law Laura and brother-in-law Ben, Woody is swimming in memory of his brother Ollie, who tragically took his own life last year after a long battle with gambling addiction. Ollie, even in his darkest moments, volunteered with Betknowmore, determined to help others stay safe from the grip of additction.
“Ollie and I always swam together growing up - we even joked about doing a charity event one day,” says Woody. “Sadly, we never got that chance. This swim is for him.”
Their team name, You'll Never Swim Alone, is a heartfelt nod to Woody and Ollie's shared love for Liverpool FC and a powerful twist on the club's iconic anthem.
What started as a £1,500 fundraising goal has since surged to over £5,500, raising vital funds and awareness for Betknowmore. With custom-made T-shirts, a sea of 20–30 supporters on the day, and a growing love for open water swimming, Woody hopes this event will shine a light on the silent struggle of gambling addiction.
“I've fallen in love with swimming outdoors,” he says. “It's peaceful and during those laps, I feel close to Ollie.”
For Team You'll Never Swim Alone, this isn't just a swim - it's a statement. A tribute. A chance to keep Ollie's spirit alive, and help others find their way through the storm.
The Great North Swim will be back from Friday 12 to Sunday 14 June 2026 and Super Earlybird entries are open. Sign up for next year here to get our lowest entry price.
