2009 proves a year to remember
Over 10,000 people took part in the inaugural British Gas Great Swim series in 2009 – four one-mile outdoor swims staged in some of the most stunning locations in the UK.
Things kicked off on August 15th with the British Gas Great London Swim, which was held at the Royal Victoria Dock in the heart of the capital and gave swimmers the rare opportunity to take to open water against the striking urban backdrop of Canary Wharf and The O2 arena.

The British Gas Great Scottish Swim followed and featured an Olympic rematch between Russia’s Larisa Ilchenko, the current Olympic 10km open-water swimming champion, and British duo Keri-Anne Payne and Cassie Patten, who finished second and third respectively at the 2008 Beijing Games.

Then it was time for the British Gas Great North Swim, the event that inspired the whole series after the terrific first staging in 2008. This year, an impressive 6,000 people took to the waters of Windermere over two days, with a field including celebrities such as Steve McFadden, who plays Phil Mitchell in EastEnders, Andy Burnham MP, Sonia O’Sullivan and GMTV’s Dr Hilary Jones.

The series concluded with the British Gas Great East Swim on September 26th at Alton Water in Suffolk. It proved a great day out for all the family with a farmers market, bandstand, trampolines and hot tub.
